TALK: Succession Planning to Preserve a Legacy
We’ve hosted our TALK events consecutively over the last year and they have now become a regular feature in many people’s diaries.
Each one is an hour long and will feature industry-leading speakers sharing expert content on a specific theme within their field. During the session, delegates will be split off into working groups to discuss and share best practice – bringing back that much-desired networking.

What are we talking about?
Many business owners are kept awake at night by one question:
“How can my entrepreneur story end in a way which allows me to take my value, preserves the good I’ve built up, and looks after the employees?”
Traditional succession planning often doesn’t provide all the answers. However, a solution is available.
Employee ownership is the new and better way of preserving your legacy. It enables:
- Passing on control without employees having to raise capital
- The owner receiving a fair market value for the business
BUT: An employee-controlled business is not like other businesses. The transition of control needs time and careful planning to build a business that might just last forever.
Session details
In this session, we’ll be joined by Chris Budd who will provide an overview of how the Employee Ownership Trust (EOT) works and the current position of the mergers and acquisition market for businesses.
This event will be done in our usual format, including breakout rooms giving delegates the opportunity to share their own thoughts and opinions. There will be a Q&A session conducted, allowing for any burning questions to be put to Chris.
This event is suitable for owners and employees of IFA businesses, but also for all advisers and paraplanners who need to know how the EOT works in order to create financial plans for clients.
Who’s talking?
Christian Markwick, Head of Adviser Support – Apricity Compliance
Christian is Apricity’s Head of Adviser Support. Having been an adviser, T&C Manager & SM16/17 for many years, he is very well placed to understand what makes firms tick, what many are trying to achieve and how to assist them in getting there.
Chris Budd, Owner – The Eternal Business Consultancy
Chris is one of the UK’s specialists in employee ownership for the SME market, having sold a majority of his financial planning business, to an Employee Ownership Trust (EOT) in March 2018.
His company, The Eternal Business Consultancy (EBC), helps business owners decide if the EOT is the right exit for them, then works with the business on the transition. EBC runs the world’s only online programme for transition to employee ownership, as well as offering consultancy support.
