Finance fresher: the first few weeks at Verve

As my first month as a ‘finance fresher’ at Verve comes to a close, I’m reflecting on what it’s been like to join a new company, in an unknown (to me) industry with a bit of a reputation – the world of finance.

Without leaning too hard into stereotypes, most people would picture the ‘Finance Guy’ as serious, money obsessed, grey suit (or beige chinos) and a bit of an attitude, doing work that’s somehow both complicated and boring. It’s an off-putting image for some, but not one I’m entirely certain is fair.

With over a decade in marketing behind me, joining Verve as Head of Marketing was a natural progression. I did my due diligence, so I already knew that Verve was the place for me: committed to innovation, inspiring growth and championing diversity. Tick tick tick.. but diving into the finance industry as a total newbie was more than a little intimidating.

There’s a lot to learn here: regulatory requirements, services, products. Tech to explore. Acronyms to unpick. And things move fast, with a razor sharp focus on client satisfaction. But the experience so far really blows Finance Guy out of the water.

The people I’ve met are friendly, funny and generously driven to share their expertise with me, with each other and the wider industry. Lots of the people I’ve met have told me they fell into finance on a whim and discovered they loved it – with loads of the team here having started through the Grad Scheme.

After almost a month at Verve, it’s becoming clear that you don’t need the typical ‘finance background’ to find success in this environment – and there’s so much creativity involved in helping people realise their business aspirations. Having made the move myself, I’m so excited to learn more every week.

From a marketing perspective, I enjoy taking time to understand what drives people to choose the services they use and how they solve the problems they’re up against. With a long way to go, my next move is to immerse myself in all things finance and soak up every insight I can get from the experts around me – signing up for newsletters, attending webinars and networking hard at exhibitions all year.

Coming up, I’ll be at GROW on Tour and Evo 2025 so if you see me, please come over and say hi! I’ll be the one with the fringe and the red lipstick. No beige chinos just yet.
